Be True Selfish

And know that it'll require some boldness

So, in attempt to live like my Dad, I issue myself the directive to…

Be True Selfish

…while knowing that this’ll require some boldness.

This minor adjustment in the phrasing reminds me to:

Trust my True Self

Because I know that my True Self is good

"Be True Selfish" reminds me to:

Live honestly

Live truthfully

Pursue what matters to me

Society might not understand

My family & friends might get upset with me

But they’ll come around to supporting me... eventually

The ones closest to me will realize that I’m just being me

Any parent just wants their kid to be happy

Any friend just wants their compadre to be free

And yet, sometimes, they might use “selfish” as a weapon to incentivize conformity

Society does the same

Leaders, bosses, strangers on the street

“You’re not doing what I want you to do. Thus, I will label you a ‘selfish dude’.”

It’s a tactic, a ploy, to align my behavior with what they want from me

See through the illusion and break through

Freedom awaits on the other side

Refuse to be shamed into conformity

Because agreeing to avoid the shame in the moment

I'll never do the things that are important

In an attempt to service an aversion

An aversion to the uncomfortable experience of judgment

Be who you are and say what you feel because people who mind don't matter and people who matter don't mind

Dr. Seuss

Be True Selfish

Be like Bill

Listen to Dr. Seuss

Jump in the pond that works for you

Swim with the fishes that you want to

(If that’s what you feel called to do)

Because if we were all a bit more True Selfish

Then, the whole pond would benefit

Red fish, Blue fish, Bubbles of bitterness

Red fish, Blue fish, Be True Selfish

Green fish, Blue fish, Swim in happiness
